Memorial Day is Monday, May 25, 2015 and most of us have plans for the weekend with even greater hopes that the incessant rain does not disrupt our plans.  Whether your choice includes family, friends, recreation or relaxation, our common traditions will always be the same.
 
Topping the list of our traditions is honoring our fallen heroes.  Our liberties including living in the world’s greatest nation are due to the countless brave men and women that have fought for the freedom of our country.  Pay tribute to our fallen heroes and honor the 1.5 million in active service.  Reach out as Americans in support of those who have stood with you, by you and for you, letting them know that they are not alone.

Starting as a day of commemoration after the Civil War by both the North and South, it was not until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson and Congress officially declared Waterloo, N.Y., the official birthplace of Memorial Day.  Congress declared what was unofficially celebrated as Decoration Day a national holiday in 1971.

In keeping with the traditional reminders, we still are the best trained skilled tradesman and maintain the highest safety standards in the construction industry.  Practice the safety training that you have received by making it a part your home and family activities.  Share these summer safety reminders with all including topics on water activities like boating, swimming and fishing.  Teach and supervise your beloved little helpers before allowing the use of any tools and always secure the power tools out of their reach.  Discuss the numerous hazards related to recreational activities as they apply.  Be most cautious using fireworks, managing campfires and on the road while making those summer trips.  Remember, while it is important for you to come home safe every day, it is equally important for you to come home knowing that your family was safe while you were away.

So celebrate Memorial Day as a day when our great soldiers laid down their lives so that we can continue to grow in a healthy, peaceful and free environment.
